Arched bar with ends bolted through deck; or a length of strong wire with the ends shaaked to deck; or a metal or strong plastic track bolted or screwed to deck. In each case it runs across (athwart) the deck from port to starboard and carries lower mainsheet block, allowing this to slide to leeward side. A modern mainsheet horse has a roller-bearing traveller to which lower mainsheet block is shackled. There are also ‘stops’ on the horse to enable sheet block to be fixed at a number of positions.
